To Make An Apple Pie From Scratch You Must First

Gather Your Ingredients

Making an apple pie from scratch requires a few key ingredients. You'll need flour, butter, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and of course, apples. Choose firm apples that are good for baking, such as Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Rome apples. It's also a good idea to have a lemon on hand to prevent the apples from browning.

Prepare the Crust

Start by making the crust. In a large mixing bowl, combine 2 1/2 cups of flour, 1 teaspoon of salt, and 1 tablespoon of sugar. Cut in 1 cup of cold butter until the mixture is crumbly. Gradually add in 1/4 to 1/2 cup of cold water until the dough comes together. Divide the dough in half and roll each half into a ball. Flatten each ball into a disk and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.

Flour

Preheat the Oven

While the dough is chilling, preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. You'll want your oven to be hot and ready when it's time to bake the pie.

Prepare the Filling

Peel and slice 6-8 apples and place them in a large mixing bowl. Squeeze the juice of 1 lemon over the apples and toss to coat. In a separate bowl, mix together 1/2 cup of sugar, 1/4 cup of flour, 1 teaspoon of cinnamon, and 1/4 teaspoon of nutmeg. Pour the dry mixture over the apples and toss until the apples are coated.

Roll Out the Dough

Remove one of the dough disks from the refrigerator and place it on a floured surface. Roll the dough out into a circle that's about 12 inches in diameter. Carefully transfer the dough to a 9-inch pie dish, pressing it down gently to fit the shape of the dish.

Add the Filling

Pour the apple filling into the prepared pie crust, spreading it out evenly. Cut 2 tablespoons of cold butter into small pieces and scatter them on top of the filling.

Top the Pie

Remove the second dough disk from the refrigerator and roll it out into a circle that's about 12 inches in diameter. Cut the dough into strips and use them to create a lattice pattern on top of the pie.

Pie Topping

Bake the Pie

Place the pie in the preheated oven and bake for 45-55 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbling. If the edges of the crust start to brown too quickly, cover them with foil. Remove the pie from the oven and let it cool for at least 30 minutes before serving.
